A rather implausible plot and exasperating if occasionally intriguing characters combine to provide a barely entertaining book.

Synopsis: This is an unanbridged recording of the romantic thriller Vanish with the Rose. Diana Reed comes to the old and expansive Virginia house and its owners as an expert in old roses. However, despite her superficial knowledge of the subject, only the good will of her hosts prevent them from noticing Diana's inexperience in in gardening. Diana is investigating a very personal mystery, while being distracted by strange happenings at the old house.

Full Review: The normal elements of a Michaels novel are all present: a prickly, defensive heroine, a hint of the supernatural, and an attraction to at first unappealing man. However, this novel suffers from several problems which detract from the suspense of the plot.

The heroine is especially frustrating, being more secretive than rational, and suffering acute pangs of angst. Despite her repeated statements of independence, supported by her profession, she acts in an old-fashioned, helpless style. The supporting characters are more exasperating than colorful, and the romantic interests in particular seem to invite being smacked—but never do. Finally, the mystery itself, as well as its resolution, seem weak and implausible, despite some telegraphing. The villain, apparently a very intelligent and capable individual, is infected with emotional irrationality by the end of the book.

Despite some local color, and pleasant background information on old roses and historical research, the plot holes and annoying characters make it difficult to enjoy this book.

Overall: 4.5; Plot: 4.5; Characters: 5.5; Style: 5; World-building: 5; Originality: 5;
