A fast and action-filled military thriller, this novel features a collection of likeable odd-ball characters, a sympathetic but overly competent protagonist, and superficial political intrigue.

Genre: Science Fiction (War, Military)

Synopsis: In a prolonged war against the Others, the more civilized races of the Confederation have recruited the more aggressive younger species to defend the civilization. Surprisingly well-integrated, several fierce races, including the Terrans, have proved to be an effective fighting force, especially the Marines.

Battle-hardened and battle-weary, Torin's platoon was due for a leave when the brass have decided to assign them to be diplomatic escorts—a presumably ceremonial duty.

However, Torin, despite being young, has been shot at enough times that she is prepared for combat. But in the touchy negotiation with a new alien race, the threats are more confusing and a lot less predictable.

Full Review: A likeable hero, the almost too-capable Torin Kerr, has little problems in putting her human needs aside when duty calls. While sympathetic, this provides little room for emotional change during the plot. Rather than maturation, the novel concentrates on describing a universe in the microcosm of a collection of eccentric warriors working together to preserve a fragile mission. The combat is raw and brutal, but not overwhelming in emotional impact, partly because the heroine is so good at concentrating on immediate needs.

The eccentrics are somewhat stereotypical, and have parallels in many military portrayals. The ending is not entirely satisfying, although well-foreshadowed.

This book, which allows a number of sequels, is mildly pleasant, but breaks little new ground in military SF.
