An intersting and exciting plot and colorful aliens make an enjoyable novel, but the world assumptions feel strained.

Genre: Science Fiction (Aliens)

Synopsis: This is another novel in the universe first set up in Expendable.

This novel takes place on Earth, which is largely non-technological except for occasional incursions by advanced aliens and the toys the use or leave behind. One of the most prevalent—a nanotech contamination—allow some people to perform seemingly magical feats.

A group of teachers in a small but well-regarded school embark on an expedition when the evidence of a powerful and harmful alien shows up as a crime. Helped and hindered by various groups, the teachers, including the protagonist, Philemon Abu Dhubhai, a slightly angsty professor of science, face unexpected dangers and demonstrate uncommon courage.

Full Review: The book is well-written, and filled with humor—frequently truly funny humor. The topic is serious, though, involving sacrifice and dangerous choices. As in some of the author's previous books, the almost farcical humor an the dark topics mix odly, and sometimes awkwardly.

A problem that further disrupts the enjoyment of the novel is the artificial constraints imposed by the Powers That Be—the alien League of Peoples. The result is that the world feels sufficiently contrived to interfere with the suspension of disbelief.

The book is interesting and its tense, accelerating plot and generally likable characters hold the reader's attention. However, the tone and the peculiar constraints on the world make it only a mildly satisfying adventure.
