Both a mystery investigation and a nostalgic look at a small New England town, the book is an entertaining look at clues and interpersonal relations.

Synopsis: The Jewish community of Barnard's Crossing is small enough that there is only one synagogue. Nonetheless, the tensions there may split it in two. The splinter group, however, are discouraged from their plan when their proposed temple becomes the center of a murder investigation. Even worse, the suspicion is concentrated on several members of the community. Rabbi Small puts his mind to the test as he tries to unravel the mystery and preserve his community.
Full Review: Along with the rest of the series, the book is a bit heavy on Temple politics. However, the low-key but intellectually proud and competent Rabbi Small, the likable Chief of Police Lanigan, and the small-town atmosphere make for a cosy, enjoyable mystery with slow unraveling of clues and alibis.
