A traditional science-fictional book, heavy on space exploration and wonder and sketchy on characterization, with a minor romantic sub-plot.

Genre: Science Fiction (Space Exploration)
Synopsis: Alis Nussem, a bright and highly professional space officer has a painful set-back in her career when she barely survives a deadly accident when an out-of-control shuttle collides with her space station. Still traumatized by her extensive injuries, she volunteers for a remote scouting. When a mysterious fast-moving object from outside enters the Solar system, Alis is chosen to command the 6-person team sent to investigate the body before it departs explored space.
Full Review: Alis is a sympathetic character, well-meaning and professional, yet deeply bitter about her injuries and the inconclusive investigation of the deadly collision. When her new mission puts her in proximity with the pilot of the shuttle, the conflict between her duty and her resentment makes for a challenging assignment.
However, when the possibly alien artifact enters the Solar system, other considerations pale in comparison to the excitement and danger involved in exploring the asteroid-sized object.
Somewhat resembling Rendezvous With Rama in plot, this book departs from exploration of character conflicts in favor of the exploration of alien wonders. Subsequent adventures of the small team, regrettably, add little excitement. Most members barely depart from pre-scripted roles, and the adventure continues on a perilous, but fairly predictable course.
While some interesting concepts are presented, most of them have been explored in older science fiction books. Combined with modest character or style features, this makes for a competent but unexciting addition to the genre.
