A rather choppy sequence of fights and other adventure, with occasionally effective black humor insufficient to compensate for thin characters.

Synopsis: Scott St. Andrew is a security chief for the Colonial President. As he tackles a suddenly tense standoff, he recollects his militarty career, as Terran forces battled the colonial fleet. His memories of the tragedy and bertrayals of war firm up his resolve to avoid a military confrontation between the powers.

Full Review: The book spans years of combat and recuperation, along with politics and internal infighting. Unfortunately, the tense combat scenes frame a choppy, sometimes barely sketched plot, which leaves little room for character building. By the end of the book, despite the pain and achievement experienced by the protagonist and his friends, there is so little emotional investment in the characters that little satisfaction is gained from the conclusion.

Overall: 4; Plot: 5; Characters: 4.5; Style: 4.5; World-building: 4.5; Originality: 5.5;
