Full Review: The novels begins with plenty of color and melodrama. Alas, the potential is not really used, with more telling than showing. The interactions seem superficial and anochronistically modern, and the historical environment a thin patina. The biggest drawback is the heroine—starting strong she quickly deteriorates into a passivity, and her prickly interactions with the romantic interest are predictable and lack spark.
