A darker addition to the humorous spy series, this book still features 2-dimensional villains amid exotic locales, but this time with a tinge of desperation absent from previous installments.

Synopsis: The grandmotherly part-time spy Mrs. Pollifax travels to Hong Kong, to investigate strange indications from a local CIA operative. Once there, the irrepressible Mrs. Pollifax finds ill-defined but very alarming signs of something dreadfully wrong in this bustling city. As she joins forces with some friends from the Interpol, the events accelerate until both the city and Mrs. Pollifax stand on the brink of destruction by a ruthless conspiracy.

Full Review: This is an unabridged recording of Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha.

Combining international terrorism, opium, disappearance of a police inspector, psychics, political fanaticism, and diamonds, this thriller boasts a fast and simple plot, evil villains, pleasant if superficial allies, and, unlike most other novels in this light-weight series, several chapters of suffering and uncertainty for Emily and her friends.

Dark as it is, the book is never graphic, and brings the more typical themes of courage, excitement, puzzle-solving and match-making to the entertaining series.

Overall: 5.5; Plot: 5; Characters: 5.5; Style: 6; World-building: 5.5; Originality: 6;
