A pleasant mystery with set in Israel around 1970, low-key despite the tensions, and with mild humor.

Synopsis: After several years as the rabbi of the jewish congregation at a small Massachusetts town, Rabbi David Small wants a break. He and his wife Miriam go to Israel for a few months. But while the trip is spiritually fulfilling for Rabbi Small, it's not without its risks. Back at home, some of the congregants are not happy with the Rabbi's extensive vacation, and would prefer not to renew his contract when he returns. In all honesty, the Rabbi himself is not entirely sure he wants to return and deal with all the tmple politics inherent in his job. And last but not least, the Arab terrorists, as well as sometimes overzelous Israeli investigators disturb the Rabbi and his friends in the Holy Land.
Full Review: The author succeeds in showing some of the aspects of Israeli life a few decades ago, with its troubles and triumphs. As in the previous books, the book maintains a small and mild approach to the narration, by focusing on a few people and with moderately humorous exaggeration and simplification. While dealing with politics and murder, somehow the book never becomes brutal or harsh.
The intellectual puzzle that the Rabbi helps to solve is a bit contrived but enjoyable, and the characters surrounding the action are colorful and generally appealing.
While not overly deep, this book is satisfying.
