This third book in a fantasy series is a pleasant, and more intense, continuation of a struggle with magical and political enemies of the kingdom of Tartalla, as seen by a young but increasingly important girl.

Synopsis: The Emperor of Carthak has long engaged in a covert struggle with Tartalla. However, neither side has enough of an advantage to start a war. In hopes of avoiding the conflict, a high-ranking delegation from Tartalla comes to the island of Carthak to negotiate a treaty with the aggressive Emperor.
However, the Emperor has unleashed the Immortals, the magical creatures long contained in the Realms of the Gods, as his allies. Ignoring the signs of divine displeasure, the Emperor Ozorne continues his plots of conquest. The teenage Daine has little strength to affect the outcome of the coming disaster—until Ozorne's greed and rage make her a part of it.
Full Review: In the third installment of the series, Daine is involved in politics. With her rare skill used to heal the Emperor's favorite pets, the good will seems enough to bridge the gap to a peaceful negotiation. However, the imperial ambition is set to jeopardize the mortal peace and the gods' temper. Despite her best efforts, both the Emperor and the gods view Daine as a useful tool. The looming disaster threatens to involve everyone in the vicinity, including Daine and her friends.
In this novel, Daine's role becomes more explicitly crucial, as the stakes involve Daine's love and her relationship with the gods. While the series is still typical in its tropes, more adult themes are introduced, and the meddling gods take a more dangerous role. Daine matures even more, and while the ending is frustratingly set for a sequel, the series continues to satisfy.
