More than a bit predictable, this adventure novel moves quickly enough to keep the reader's not-too-critical attention for a mildly entertaining experience.

Genre: Science Fiction (Aliens, War, Space Opera)

Synopsis: Chris Dykstra is a venerable scientist by any standard. Older than most people get to live even in the medically advanced era, the brilliant physicist has garnered all known awards in his over 120 years. Called "the Einstein of the 21st Century", he has long since retired to his comfortable living. His most vexing problem was some difficulty in walking. That is, until a special military courier arrived on his doorstep with an incomprehensible device.

It seems Humanity achieved first contact—and the aliens are technicly advanced, and very, very hostile.

Full Review: Dr. Dykstra's and his colleagues are drafted into an interstellar equivalent of a Manhattan Project. Their adventures and rapid progress are highly reminiscent of traditional Space Operas from the early pulp days—although better written. There is the same improbable rapid scientific/techincal advance, with similar handwaving. However, the characters are sympathetic, if a bit two-dimensional, and there is a bit of humor integrated into the narrative.

Some parts show the signs of a make-up novel, like redundant introductions in the middle of the book; but in general, the pacing is rapid enough that the plot keeps the reader's attention.

The space battles, the mild romances, and lightly sketched backgrounds for the characters keep up with the Space Opera tradition. In all, an entertaining, fast read, although lacking plausibility or originality.

Overall: 5; Plot: 4.5; Characters: 5; Style: 5; World-building: 4.5; Originality: 4.5;
