A novel of England still haunted by the Great War, this mystery has good atmosphere and decent characters, but the dull protagonist has little appeal.

Genre: Mystery (Private Investigator)

Synopsis: Years after the Great War (WWI), Britain still carries the scars. Maise Dobbs, a private detective, is one of the people whose scars are physical. However, many more still suffer from shock.

When Maisie is asked to find a missing daughter of a rich businessman, she needs to expose the pain that still lingers from the war.

Full Review: The author is good at portraying the country that combines both the cheer and energy of enterprise and the sorrow and resentments lingering from the war. The characters are well-portrayed, but are not very appealing. The main obstacle, however, is the protagonist herself—she is intelligent, courageous and persistent, but her lack of humor make this somewhat bleak novel less than engaging.

Overall: 5; Plot: 5.5; Characters: 5; Style: 5.5; World-building: 6; Originality: 5;
